Federal News
- Canada’s economy added 245,800 jobs in August, a fourth-straight month of gains that has recouped almost two thirds of employment losses from the pandemic. Unemployment fell from 10.9% in july to 10.2% 10.2% in August. Of these new jobs, 205,800 were full-time and 40,000 were part-time.
Source - Concerns rise as Ontario, Quebec, and B.C. have all seen steady increases in the number of active COVID-19 cases. B.C. announced 89 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday with Quebec having reported 187 new cases. Ontario recorded its eighth straight day with more than 100 new cases.

- 184 cases of COVID-19 were announced on Friday, bringing the total number of cases in the province since the start of the pandemic to 63,117. 25 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded on the Island of Montreal on Friday, bringing the total number of cases in the city to 29,961

- As Some 10,000 family childcare providers, called a rotating strike on Monday, which will happen throughout Quebec until Sept. 18. An indefinite general strike is scheduled for Sept. 21 if there is no resolution by then.

- Moderna is slowing enrollment of its coronavirus vaccine trial slightly to ensure minority representation, potentially putting it behind Pfizer. Moderna shares fell more than 8% after the news, but have already recovered somewhat. Diversity “matters more to us than speed.”, said Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel.
Source - U.S. employment growth slowed further in August and permanent job losses increased as money from the government started running out. Nearly a fifth of the job gains reported by the Labor Department on Friday were from the government’s temporary hiring for the 2020 Census.

- Russia’s “Sputnik-V” COVID-19 vaccine has produced an antibody response in all participans in early stage trials, according to results published by the Lancet Medical Journal. From the two trials conducted in June-July this year, 100% of the participants, from a sample size of 76, developed antibodies to the virus with no serious side effects.
Source - Pharmaceutical companies GSK and Sanofi have said they are starting clinical trials of their coronavirus vaccine. They hope to have the first results of the trial by December and if it is successful they will move on to further trials by the end of the year.
