Federal News
- Provinces are pressuring Ottawa to pause plans to hike CPP premiums next year as they were supposed to rise starting January 1st, 2021. The planned increase is part of a multi-year plan approved by provinces and governments four years ago to boost retirement benefits.
Source - Statistics Canada says the number of businesses closing declined slightly in August as restrictions had eased. The agency says there were 34,126 closures in August, down 2.7% from July and 14.2% lower than prior to the pandemic in February.

- Petition launched by a Town of Mount-Royal resident to scrap a proposed plan of redevelopment for the area around Rockland Mall, which would bring in more residents through the construction of high rises, has reached 1,200 signatures. The consultation period has now been extended.

- Though Montreal restaurant owners relieved with the announcement of financial help was made, but now two months later, several owners say they are still waiting for the payments. In October, Quebec promised aid in the form of loans and up to 80% of that loan to be forgiven.

- U.S. drug manufacturer Moderna to apply for U.S. and European emergency authorization for its COVID-19 vaccine on Monday following results from late stage study showing efficacy rate of 94.1% with no serious safety concerns. The vaccine’s efficacy rate was consistent across the age range.

- According to health secretary, Alex Azar, the first two vaccines against COVID-19 could be administered to Americans before Christmas. Azar and Vice-president Pence to speak to state governors to discuss which groups of people should be prioritized.

- Telecoms providers must halt installation of Huawei equipment in the UK’s 5G mobile network from September, according to the government. The announcement comes ahead of a new law to be revealed Tuesday which will ban the Chinese firm from the network.

- China is imposing taxes on Australian wine up to 212% starting this Saturday. Commerce ministry says these were temporary anti-dumping measures to stop subsidized imports of Australian wine. Duties range from 107% to 212%, further intensifying trade tensions.
