Federal News
- The federal emergency wage subsidy program will be extended to December of this year. The program covers 75% of wages, up to weekly maximum of $847, for eligible companies affected by the pandemic. As of July 6, the wage subsidy paid out $18.01 billion to 252,370 companies.
Source - Canadians’ buying patterns have changed during the pandemic and caused its measures for consumer inflation to go haywire. Figures show consumers are spending more on items that don’t weigh as much in the price index, which tracks inflation, like groceries, Stats Can says.

- Quebec biopharmaceutical company, Medicago, has begun clinical trials on humans of its plant-derived COVID-19 vaccine. Medicago is the first Canadian company to administer doses of a potential vaccine to volunteers. Expected efficacity results for the two doses set for October.
Source - The Quebec government is giving the film and television industry a $51 million temporary assistance program. The program’s goal is to finance filming in order to maintain production capacity of the industry, in addition to compensate producers for interruptions caused by the virus.

- Delta Airlines chief executive, Ed Bastian warns that air travel is “at a stall” and the demand that built up during June for Vegas, Florida and New York have suffered due to new cases and quarantine. It also warned it will be more than two years before seeing sustainable recovery.

- U.S. ‘largest bank, JP Morgan, reports a 51% plunge in its second quarter profits as provisions for credit losses spiked, at 10.5 billion, and the shape of the recovery becoming more uncertain. The bank posted a $5 billion loss compared to last year’s same quarter.

- UK prime minister Boris Johnson has ordered Huawei equipment to be completely removed from the country’s 5G network by 2027. News gives signals to China that the world’s biggest telecoms equipment maker is no longer welcomed in the West.

- According to a UK study, immunity to COVID-19 may only last a few months, now casting doubt over longevity of a vaccine. Researchers at Kings College London found that antibody response to the virus peaked three weeks after symptoms but began to decline after only two months.
