Federal News
- WestJet implements a new measures against passengers refusing to comply with masking rules on flights. From September 1st, the airliner will follow an escalating response protocol. First cabin crew will ask passengers to wear a mask, followed by an official warning and could go to a one year-long no fly order.
Source - Statistics Canada says the economy posted its steepest decline on record in the second quarter as the pandemic forced several business closures. The agency says real gross domestic product contracted at an annualized rate of 38.7% for the three-month period.

- Preliminary data collected from the Federation des CEGEP suggests that numbers are up for students enrolled in the fall semester at one of the province’s 48 CEGEPs. Data collected shows 174,503 students enrolled for fall, a 3% increase from same period last year.
Source - Autorité regionale de transport metropolitan (ARTM) announces that starting September 1, commuters will be able to purchase fares through the Chrono and Transit app and will allow correspondence on all bus lines for 120 minutes. Electronic tickets expected to end Dec 31 2020.

- U.S. retail giant Walmart is said to join Microsoft in the bid for Tik Tok’s U.S. operations. According to reports, Tik Tok’s U.S. operations could go for as much as $30 billion. The claims are that a Chinese internet firm, Bytedance collects data from the 100 million US users and is an exploitation risk.
Source - Coca Cola Co. is announcing it will nearly halve its operating units and offer voluntary separation to 4,000 workers as the world’s largest beverage maker battles a hit to sales due to the pandemic. Last month, it reported a 28% slump in sales as restaurants, theatres and sports venues closed.

- Japanese prime minister, Shinzo Abe, announces resignation citing health reasons. The 65-year-old has dealt with ulcerative colitis for many years but says it has gotten worse lately. He is Japan’s longest serving prime minister and will remain in office until a successor is named.
Source - Despite an upsurge in COVID-19 cases, Italy has ruled out imposing a new nationwide lockdown as it is still struggling to emerge from the worst recession in living memory. Italy’s health minister says contagion is limited and has a low impact on the country’s health services compared to first wave.
